December 07, 2018

GEORGE, WA. – According to an online news report from, a University of Washington charter bus crashed on Interstate 90 while traveling to eastern Washington for a football game against Washington State University. More than 40 people were injured.*

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, a charter bus was carrying members of the University of Washington marching band to the Apple Cup in Pullman, Washington, where the University’s football team was scheduled to face in-state rival Washington State on November 23. Near George, Washington, at mile marker 143 on I-90 East, the bus encountered an icy patch in the roadway and overturned on the interstate.

A total of 56 people were on board the bus at the time of the crash, and 47 were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment of injuries. None of the victims has been identified. In a statement released November 23, University Athletics Director Jennifer Cohen said two people remained hospitalized, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Cohen also said the marching band would not appear at the Apple Cup, as the band members had decided they needed to return home to recover.

The bus was one of three carrying the marching band and one of six University buses headed east on Thanksgiving Day for the game. The crash blocked a frontage road outside of George and delayed traffic on the interstate while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Officials are still investigating the crash and have not released additional information at this time.
