New Information Released About Georgia Motorcyclist Killed on I-59 in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – New information has been released about a Georgia motorcyclist who was killed in an accident on Interstate 59 in Birmingham, Alabama, according to an online news report from The motorcyclist crashed on an overpass on the interstate and fell over the railing. The cause of the crash is still not clear at this time.* 

The crash occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. on November 23. Officials in Birmingham say 45-year-old Michael Lavon Johnson, of Austell, Georgia, was riding a motorcycle on I-59 South and lost control on an overpass near the 22nd Street Exit. Johnson crashed into the concrete railing on the overpass, was ejected from the motorcycle, and fell onto the road below. 

The Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner pronounced Johnson dead at the scene. He was reportedly traveling to Birmingham from Georgia for Thanksgiving, and his relatives were traveling behind him. They did not witness the accident but came across Johnson’s wrecked motorcycle and discovered his body after they stopped and looked over the bridge.  

It is not clear what caused Johnson to lose control of the motorcycle. No additional information has been released at this time. An obituary and information about services are not yet available. 

Austell, Georgia, is located in Cobb County. Cobb County is located in the northwestern part of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of 755,000. It is the third-most populated county in the state, and its county seat is Marietta. Austell is about 160 miles from Birmingham on I-59.
