One Dead, Two Injured After EMS Vehicle Crashes into Truck in South Carolina

November 30, 2018

BEAUFORT, SC. – According to an online news report from wjcl.com, one person is dead and two are injured after an EMS vehicle crashed into a pickup truck November 17 in Beaufort, South Carolina.*

The crash occurred on November 17 in Beaufort. A county emergency services vehicle crashed into a Dodge pickup truck that was stopped at a red light near Bruce K. Smalls Drive. No names have been released, but reports indicate the Dodge pickup was carrying a Beaufort family of six who were on their way to Ohio for Thanksgiving.

An adult and a child from the Dodge were injured and transported to hospitals in Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia. The adult died on the evening of November 19, and the child is reportedly still hospitalized. The driver of the EMS vehicle was transported to Beaufort Memorial. No current medical conditions have been reported.

It is not clear what caused the accident, but the corridor where the crash occurred is a dangerous place to drive, according to the Burton Fire District. People are at risk of crashes, even when few people are on the road, because of poor lighting and high speeds, firefighters said.

“It’s a very dark roadway,” said Lt. Daniel Byrne, of the Burton Fire District. “There’s no streetlights out there. It’s a highway, so the speed limit is a little higher, not only at Trask Parkway but Laurel Bay Road, Robert Smalls Parkway. Some of these roadways and intersections are very dangerous.”

South Carolina authorities are investigating the crash and have not yet released additional information.
