Driver Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-59 in Dade County, Georgia

November 30, 2018

DADE COUNTY, GA. – A driver was killed in a four-vehicle crash November 19 in Dade County, Georgia, according to an online news report from wrcbtv.com.

According to the Dade County Sheriff’s Office, on November 19, a tractor-trailer was attempting to merge onto Interstate 59 South from the side of the roadway and traveled into the path of a passenger car. The car struck the back of the tractor-trailer, and two other passenger cars collided as a result.

The driver of the first car was killed in the crash. Two other people were injured, and their current medical conditions have not been released. None of the victims has been identified. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 35-year-old Stephen W. Farmer, of Fort Payne, Alabama, was arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield when entering the roadway.

Interstates are the sites of frequent accidents involving large trucks and buses, according to local reports. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck.

During the week of August 6, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Georgia targeted dangerous drivers on state interstates. In total, officers in Cobb County issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
