Alabama Tow Truck Driver Honored for Saving Baby from Burning Car

November 30, 2018

TUSCALOOSA, AL. – An Alabama tow truck driver was honored November 17 for his act of bravery in saving a baby from a burning car in July 2018. Details of the ceremony are reported at yellowhammernews.com.*

On July 27, Andre Harris was finishing a job for Bambarger Wrecker Service in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, when he spotted smoke coming from a nearby car. The car was wrecked, and a woman was standing there screaming that her baby was inside. Harris ran to the burning car and jumped to action, breaking the car window and pulling seven-month-old Demarcus Richardson to safety.

“When I reached into the car, I had to feel around because I couldn’t see due to the smoke in the car and the darkness,” Harris told reporters after the event. “I felt a tiny little leg, and I started pulling, and the next thing you know, I got to the top of the hill with the baby, and I looked back at the car.”

With Harris’s fast-acting bravery, the boy suffered only a few scrapes and cuts. Word of the event traveled around the country, and on November 17, Harris was honored with the American Towman Medal at the American Towman Show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Harris’s employer, Bambarger, said the prestigious medal is given to select people for “some of the most amazing acts in the annals of human rescue.” The company went on to say that “Indiana Jones and Superman have nothing on the American Towman. The Medal Ceremony has evolved over the years into the March of the Heroes.”

Harris gave all the credit for saving the baby to God. He said he was thankful that God put him in the position to help the baby and his mother, and that he had done what any other American would have done.
