Georgia College Holds Celebration of Life for Professor Killed in Car Crash

November 30, 2018

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA. – Georgia College students and faculty gathered November 26 to honor a professor tragically killed November 20 in a tragic head-on car crash. The story is reported online by 13wmaz.com.*

The accident occurred around 5 p.m. on November 20 on Highway 49, near the border between Baldwin County and Jones County in Georgia. A Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling southbound crossed the centerline of the roadway, ran a northbound car off the road, and struck another northbound car head-on.

The driver of the pickup, 38-year-old Howard Massengale, of Jones County, was airlifted from the scene with a broken pelvis. It is not clear whether he sustained any additional injuries, and his current medical condition is not known. It is not yet clear why he crossed the centerline of the roadway.

The driver of the car that Massengale crashed into was 44-year-old Jennifer Hammack. Hammack and her 15-year-old daughter, who was also riding in the car at the time, died at the scene. Hammack was an associate professor of criminal justice at Georgia College and an advisor to the school’s mock trial team.

On November 26, about 500 people gathered in the Russell Auditorium at Georgia College to grieve, share stories, and celebrate the lives of Hammack and her daughter. Student and mock trial team member Madison Yashinsky was one person to pass on her memories of Hammack.

“Every year, she dedicated her entire life and time and energy to this team,” Yashinsky said. “She was the most amazing mentor, and I instantly fell in love with her and her personality. She was bold, she was fearless, and she was honest.”
