November 30, 2018

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA. – A vehicle crash that occurred November 27 in Cherokee County, Georgia, claimed the life of one teenager and injured three others, according to an online news report from wsbtv.com.*

The crash occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on November 27 on Old Orange Mill Road in Cherokee County. It is not clear how the crash happened or whether more than one vehicle was involved. Officials say a 17 year old who was riding in the front passenger’s seat of a vehicle died in the crash.

The driver of the same vehicle, another 17 year old, and a passenger in the back seat, also 17 years old, were seriously injured in the crash and transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. A second passenger in the back seat of the same vehicle, a 15 year old, sustained minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital.

None of the victims has been identified at this time, and authorities have not released any additional information about the accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In 2015, a total of 2,333 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle crashes in the United States. This equates to six teen deaths every day due to motor vehicle injuries. More than 235,000 teenagers of the same age were treated in emergency departments in 2016 for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes.

Teen drivers are more likely to underestimate dangerous situations, per the CDC, and less likely to recognize hazardous situations. They are also more likely than older drivers to make decision errors that lead to vehicle accidents. Teens are statistically more likely to speed and follow other cars too closely.
