Georgia DOT Addresses Upcoming Projects for Union City

December 02, 2018

UNION CITY, GA. – According to an online news report from, the Georgia Department of Transportation addressed funding and plans for upcoming road projects in Union City, Georgia, during a townhall meeting on November 15.*

The biggest project discussed during the meeting was a $47 million plan for a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at Interstate 85 and Highway 138 (Jonesboro Road). The project is not yet underway but is set to begin in 2024.

“[A DDI is] where traffic actually crosses over at a light, gets to the left side and then can make a left to go onto the interstate,” said Georgia DOT Director of Program Delivery Albert Shelby. “It facilitates traffic flow a lot better than your traditional urban diamond that’s currently right there right now. That particular project will move both through-traffic and the turn movements a lot better.”

Plans are also in the works to replace the bridge on State Route 14 (Roosevelt Highway) that runs over the railroad tracks between Welcome All Road and Yankee Drive. The original bridge was constructed in the late 1930s. The replacement project is slated to begin in 2022 at a cost of $3 million.

Smaller projects are already under construction in Union City and will be completed before the end of 2019. These include pedestrian upgrades at the western edge of Roosevelt Highway and Jonesboro Road and traffic signal upgrades at State Route 6 (Camp Creek Parkway), State Route 14 Alternate (South Fulton Parkway), and Flat Shoals Road. These projects will cost $1 million and $2.4 million, respectively.
