Georgia State Patrol Releases Holiday Enforcement Numbers

December 04, 2018

GEORGIA – According to an online news report from, Georgia State Patrol has released its enforcement numbers related to the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. The number of citations and vehicle crashes rose from last year.*

During the Thanksgiving travel period last year, Georgia State Patrol Troopers wrote 521 tickets, 214 of which were for speeding. They also responded to seven vehicle crashes in the state. This year, those numbers increased. Troopers wrote 580 tickets, with 329 for speeding, and they responded to nine vehicle crashes.

The increase is likely due in part to the higher number of people on the roads for the holiday this year. More than 50 million people were estimated to be traveling between Wednesday and Sunday during Thanksgiving week, representing the busiest travel stretch in more than 10 years. Lower gas prices and a stronger economy had more people choosing to travel and opting to travel by car.

“When the economy’s good, people drive more, they travel more,” said Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Chris Nease. But even with the expected increase in people on the roads in Georgia, Nease said Troopers approached their enforcement the same as usual.

“We’ll use the same kind of patrol techniques that we use,” he said. “There are certain days that we’ll have just about everyone working. So we’ll kind of flood the area with patrols and do aggressive, strict enforcement.”

Air travel was extremely busy during the holiday, too, and many people’s travel plans were interrupted by a severe winter storm in the Midwest. Snow and strong winds caused about 2,000 flights to be canceled around the country, more than 800 of which were at Chicago’s airport.
