Safety Questions over Taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts

December 05, 2018

ALABAMA- writes that there are millions of vehicle in the state of Alabama that need to be brought in for repairs or for recalls and updates. Some of those vehicles may be taxis or part of ride-share companies like Lyft and Uber.*

Many drivers are not even aware that their own vehicles need to be serviced because of a safety recall. With so many vehicles on the road that present possible safety risks to riders, it is likely that many people are unwittingly getting into ridesharevehicles that are possibly dangerous. While there are recalled vehicles in every state, Alabama has one of the highest number of recalled vehicles on the road in the country. About one out of every four cars on the road in the state is subject to a recall and have not been in to have the repairs completed.

Rideshare companies have policies that are meant to ensure that their vehicles meet the current safety standards. Uber says that the company issues reminders to their drivers to stay up to date on any recalls for their vehicles, and Lyft says that their drivers frequently are askedto represent that their vehicles are up to date with industry safety standards.

Some rideshare vehicles have been found to have failed to stay up to date with recalls. The drivers said they did not know that their vehicles had been subject to recalls.

Most taxis were also safe, but there were some that had not had recall repairs conducted.

For the most part, drivers who were operating recalled vehicles said they did not get notice of the recall. The problem does occur when manufacturers who issue the recalls do not have the correct address on file.
