East Lake Intersection to Become Four-Way Stop in Henry County, Georgia

December 04, 2018

HENRY COUNTY, GA- The ajc.com writes that plans to make the intersection of East Lake Road and Harper Road a four-way stop were approved by the county. The Department of Transportation investigated the matter after complaints from the public. An engineering study was conducted to see whether or not the location met the requirements for an all-way stop.*

The accident history at the location was also analyzed. The most recent and complete years’ data was reviewed, andreports of six accidents were found between 2013 and 2017. Based on complaints and unreported accidents that had to do with the intersection, the county officials found that the intersection created a safety risk to people in the area.

Intersections controlled by stop signs see a high number of crashes across the United States. More than 40 percent of fatal crashes at intersections happen at those intersections that are controlled by stop signs. Mostof these accidents involve driver traveling through stop signs when it is unsafe to do so. While a small percentage of crashes involve drivers completely running stop signs, most accidents are the result of a driver who slows or stops, and then proceeds when the road is not clear.

Sometimes the problem is that drivers’ views of the road are blocked by obstructions, or because glare makes it difficult to see.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), all-way stops can improve safety. Another solution that can improve safety even more than additional stop signs is converting intersections into roundabouts, which can lower the number of crashes by around 40 percent.
