Victims of Crash With Police Vehicle May Take 6 Months to Identify
SOUTH FULTON, GA- According to 11alive.com, the Georgia State Police are reporting that the victims from a collision involving a South Fulton police vehicle still have not been identified. Police are now saying that the identification process may take far longer than originally anticipated. The collision occurred on Interstate 85 when a South Fulton police vehicle was in pursuit of a Mercedes Benz that was reportedly stolen.*
The police vehicle struck a work van in the side. The vehicle was making a left turn andwas hit in the side. The van flipped over and caught on fire with the six occupants still inside. The police vehicle also caught on fire, but the officer, identified as Deontae Walker, 25, was able to get out of the vehicle. Three of the people inside the work van were killed in the accident and ensuing fire.
The police are saying that the identification of the burned victims could take as long as six months. The driver of the van, identified as Gilmer Gomez-Lopez, 25 survived the crash and provided information regarding the identity of the people who had been traveling in the van. The investigation will require DNA identification, a process which will likely take longer because the families of the victims live in other countries.
The officer only sustained minor injuries. TheSouth Fulton police department was created this year, and Walker has been with the department since that time. Walker previously served with the Fulton County department. There has been no news about Walker’s condition.
The crash is still being investigated by the Georgia State Police’s specialized reconstruction team.
