Truck Lanes for Interstate 75 Still Years Away

December 02, 2018

FLOVILLA- writes that the heavy traffic on Interstate 75 will eventually be improved upon with the installation of truck-only lanes. The project is still several years away from being completed.*

The project involves 40 miles of lanes and will cost about $1.8 billion to complete.

The 75 Central Corridor Coalition held a meeting about the proposal on Thursday, November 15, 2018. The lanes would be mostly northbound, and the plan estimates that they would allow for a 10 to 12 percent reduction in travel time for commercial vehicles.

The project is currently slated to begin by 2025, but the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is hoping to find a way to speed up the timeline.

Trucks transport 85 percent of all freight in Georgia, and the amount transported is only getting larger.

Around 70 percent of the commercial trucks that enter Georgia are there astheir final destination. About 35 percent of the average of 75,000-90,000 vehicles that drive the relevant portion of Interstate 75 every day are commercial vehicles.

Traffic on the interstate is projected to increaseto between 120,000 to 150,000 vehicles every day, and 40 percent beingcommercial trucks.

More trucks drive the road on their way north.

Every week a truck is involved in about one accident on Interstate 75. Truck drivers have to account for heavy traffic and often add an hour of extra time to their journey in an effort to ensure on-timedelivery.

The area was found to be a prime location for expanding and adding truck lanes because it is close to many of Atlanta’s warehouses and distribution centers.
