Mom Pushing Stroller Struck and Killed by SUV in Kent

December 02, 2018

KENT- writes that a mother was killed by an SUV that struck her while she was in a crosswalk. The woman was pushing her two children when she was hit by the vehicle.*

The accident took place at State Street and Smith Street on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. Witnesses reported that the woman did everything she was supposed to when she entered the crosswalk. The victim paused before entering the crosswalk and looked for vehicles. The SUV then drove up and turned and struck the woman.

One witness reported hearing the commotion at the accident scene. There were people crying, and police officers were seen assisting the children.

According to the police report, the driver failed to see the woman and the children. Witnesses say the driver looked elderly.

The children were reportedly not injured in the incident.

Pedestrian accidents are a major problem in the United States where pedestrian deaths have been on the rise every year, even while other motor vehicle accidents are on the decline. One of the most hazardous situations for pedestriansis when they are crossing the street while vehicles are turning left. According to, about one out of every four pedestrian crashes involves a vehicle that is making a left turn. This is because when a vehicle is turningleft, they have a green light while the walk light is telling pedestrians that it is safe to cross the street.

Pedestrians need to remember that a walk light does not mean that there is no need to look out for vehicles. Drivers should remember that their vehicles have blind spots and to yield to pedestrians during their walk lights.
