Teen Struck by Car, Two Pedestrians Struck by Another Vehicle

December 04, 2018

GEORGIA - Macon.com writes that three people suffered severe injuries in pedestrian incidents that took place in Macon and Warner Robins.*

One of the crashes involved a 14-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at the intersection of Green Street and Houston Road at about 3:30 p.m. The boy was riding his bike across the street when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla that was driving northbound on Houston Road.

The boy was listed in serious condition. He was transported to the Medical Center, Navient Health, in Macon.

The other collision took place at about 1:40 p.m. in Bibb County. Two pedestrians, 52-year-old Paula Pittman and 52-year-old Kenneth Jackson were both struck while attempting to cross the street close to the intersection of Mercer University Drive and Bloomfield Road. The victims were struck by a 24-year-old driving a 2015 Toyota Corolla.

Reports indicate that Pittman was critically injured. Jackson was said to be stable.

No charges were filed against either of the drivers.

Pedestrian fatalities have been increasing in the United States in recent years. Around 6,000 pedestrians died in vehicle accidents in both 2017 and 2016.

In Georgia, the state is working to lower the number of pedestrian fatalities by developing statewide plans for assessing the most dangerous places and taking countermeasures to address the dangerous areas.

One possible reason for the rising pedestrian incidents is smartphone usage. Both drivers and pedestrians are often looking at screens instead of paying attention to what they are doing. Another theory is that legalization of marijuana is leading to more people driving under the influence of drugs.
