Georgia Woman Injured in Missouri Vehicle Wreck

LAWRENCE COUNTY, MO. – According to an online news story from joplinglobe.com, a Georgia woman was injured in a vehicle wreck that took place in Lawrence County, Missouri.*

The crash occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on November 18 on Interstate 44 in Lawrence County. At Halltown, an eastbound tractor-trailer ran off the roadway and struck a median cable. The tractor-trailer then overturned, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol. 

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 55-year-old Jan N. Griffith, of Acworth, Georgia, was transported to Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri, with minor injuries. A passenger in the tractor-trailer, 49-year-old Clyde Whitworth, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, was also transported to Cox Medical Center. Whitworth reportedly sustained serious injuries. Current medical conditions were not reported. 

It is not yet clear what caused the tractor-trailer to run off the roadway. It does not appear any other vehicles or people were involved. Missouri authorities are investigating and have not released additional information at this time. 

Acworth is located in Cobb County, Georgia, in the northwestern part of the state. According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year, with an increase in these accidents occurring during the span of several years. 

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety collected data on accidents in the county from 2012 to 2016. In 2012, a total of 11,767 vehicle accidents occurred in Cobb County, leading to 2,860 injuries and 47 deaths. 

By 2016, those numbers had increased to 34,985 total accidents, 8,470 injuries, and 59 deaths. During both 2012 and 2016, more than half of the fatality accidents in Cobb County were related to speeding or alcohol consumption.
