Georgia Woman Charged with Vehicular Homicide, DUI for Deadly I-75 Wreck

December 06, 2018

BARTOW COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, a Georgia woman has been charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence in connection with a deadly wreck that occurred November 18 on Interstate 75 in Bartow County, Georgia.*

At approximately 11:55 p.m. on November 18, 73-year-old Delores Nowell, of Cedartown, Georgia, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Impala northbound on I-75 in Bartow County. At the Groovers Landing overpass, Nowell stopped her vehicle in the right lane. It is not clear why she stopped, but police noted she was under the influence of alcohol. A tractor-trailer traveling northbound in the right lane came upon Nowell’s Chevy and swerved left to try to avoid a crash.

The tractor-trailer collided with the side of the Chevy, then left the roadway and struck a Honda that was parked in the emergency lane on the east side of the interstate. The tractor-trailer forced the Honda into a guardrail and drove over the top of the Honda, crashing through the guardrail.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 32-year-old Brian Walker, of Jonesboro, Georgia, was reportedly not injured in the crash. The driver of the Honda, 49-year-old Robert Whitman, of Emerson, Georgia, sustained critical injuries and was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. He is still listed in critical condition. A passenger in the Honda, 56-year-old Bobbie Whitman, of Emerson, tragically died in the crash. An 8-year-old child was also riding in the Honda but was not injured.

Nowell was arrested and booked into the Bartow County Jail, where she is being held without bond. She has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and improper slowing or stopping on the roadway.
