November 26, 2018

WARNER ROBINS, GA- According to, a teenager was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the street with his bike. Police report that the incident occurred at about 3:30 in the afternoon at the intersection of Green Street and Houston Road.*

The report indicates that the light was red, but for the green turn signal permitting the traffic, making left turns onto Green Street to proceed. The 14-year-old boy walked into the street and was struck by a 2011 Toyota Corolla that was northbound on Houston Road.

The boy was taken to the Medical Center Navient Health where he was reportedly in serious condition.

No charges are currently pending in relation to the accident.

While there has been a very slight decline in traffic deaths in the United States, pedestrian fatalities have not dropped. Between 2009 and 2016, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety(IIHS) reports that pedestrian deaths increased by about 46 percent.

Many factors have contributed to the streets becoming more dangerous to pedestrians. Drivers travel at higher speeds, and speed limits in many places have increased. People are buying larger cars, such as SUVs which are more dangerous to pedestrians than smaller vehicles. Many drivers and pedestrians are distracted by their smartphones and are at an increased risk of being involved in an accident.

In response to the high number of pedestrian deaths, better vehicle features are being designed with pedestrians in mind. Some proposed changes include automatic braking, pedestrian detection systems, softer hoods, better headlight designs, front-crash prevention, and rear-view cameras.

Front-crash prevention technology in many vehicles is geared towards detecting other vehicles. However, some models are designed to help reduce pedestrian incidents as well.
