Company Fined by OSHA After Fatal Accident

November 26, 2018

SAVANNAH, GA- The cdllife.com writes that the investigation into the death of an employee at U.S. Xpress has concluded.*

The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) carried out the investigation following an incident that took place in April that led to the death of an employee. The accident occurred at the Dollar Tree Distribution Center in Savannah, Georgia. An employee was walking between two semi-trailers and was hit by a yard truck. The truck dragged the victim before the driver noticed that he had hit the man. The victim tragically died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

Following the investigation into the incident, OSHA cited the Dollar Tree and U.S. Xpress after determining that the companies had exposed their employees to dangers and on-site hazards that led to the death of one of their workers.

The Dollar Tree Distribution Center received several other citations as well for “using a vehicle with a non-functioning headlight, failing to guard a nip point on a conveyor discharge belt, and storing unstable materials on racks.”

The penalties imposed on U.S. Xpress amount to $12,934, and the penalties imposed on the Dollar Tree Distribution Center Inc. amount to $130,112.

Following the fatal incident, the distribution center wrote that safety is their first priority and claimed to be cooperating in full with the investigation. However, the director of OSHA in the Savannah area stated that the incident was preventable and that the employers could have eliminated the risks to their employees if they had assessed the on-site hazards and taken appropriate actions.
