Work-related injuries have dropped in the United States since the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was founded in the 1970s. In 1970, 38 American workers died every day. In 2016, the number had dropped to 14. In 2016, a total of 5,190 workers died while on the job. OSHA investigates workplace accidents and fatalities.

The administration has 2,100 inspectors who are responsible for overseeing health and safety issues for about 130 million workers at over 8 million workplaces. Each compliance officer is therefore responsible for overseeing 59,000 workers.

The industry where the largest percentage of work-related fatalities take place is in construction. Many of the risks are associated with the large and powerful machinery these workers handle every day. OSHA states that there are four main categories of accidents that account for a large number of fatalities each year in the construction industry.

OSHA says that by eliminating accidents including falls, being struck by objects, electrocutions, andaccidents that involve workers being caught in-between or crushed by pieces of equipment, materials or objects. OSHA says that eliminating these types of accidents would save an average of 631 American workers every year.
