Woman Died in Crash on US 158 in Forsyth County, Georgia

November 26, 2018

BELEWS CREEK- A three-vehicle crash took place on U.S. 158 in Forsyth County, Georgia and reportedly involved another passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer.*

The accident happened on U.S. 158, which is also called Reidsville Road. No additional information about the cause of thecrash is available at this time.

Accidents involving trucks are particularly dangerous for drivers who are in smaller passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2016, there were 3,986 fatalities on roadways in the United States. Only 17 percent of the total number of people killed in these accidents were occupants of the large trucks. Drivers of passenger vehicles made up 66 percent of the deaths, and another 17 percent was made up of motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The risks to passenger vehicle occupants are highlighted when looking at the statistics for just deadly crashes that involve passenger vehicles and trucks. In these incidents, the people killed were almost entirely those in the smaller vehicles. A full 97 percent of victims were the people in passenger vehicles.

The numbers are not particularly surprising. Semi-trucks can weight anywhere from 20 to 30 times that or a smaller passenger vehicle. The size and weight difference makethese crashes frightening for the people in smaller vehicles. Additionally, the smaller vehicles are at risk of driving under the taller trucks and become wedged in “underriding” crashes.

It is important for drivers to be carefulwhen traveling in close proximity to trucks. Trucks are not as maneuverable as cars and other passenger vehicles, and they cannot stop as quickly.
