Pedestrian Killed in Jesup, Georgia Crash

November 25, 2018

JESUP, GA- writes that a woman tragically died after being struck by a vehicle on Monday in Jesup, Georgia. The incident occurred at about 1 in the morning according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The driver was operating a 2002 Lincoln Navigator when he hit the victim.*

The driver of the Lincoln was identified as 30-year-old Cody Chrisholm.

The victim, 25-year-old Jessica Sneede was rushed to the Wayne Memorial Hospital where she died from injuries that she sustained in the crash.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. So far, no charges have been filed.

Pedestrian deaths have been on the rise in recent years. Since 2009, the rate of pedestrian fatalities has increased by 46 percent. Most of these incidents take place in the dark.

The type of vehicle responsible for more pedestrian deaths than any other is the SUV. The reason these vehicles are believed to cause more pedestrian deaths than any other has to do with SUV design.

The higher number of SUVs on the road, and their design, which includes a higher and flatter front end are likely contributing to the high number of pedestrian deaths in the county.

Another factor often posited as a likely cause of increasing pedestrian incidents is distracted walking, but this theory has been criticized. The greatest increase in pedestrian deaths has come from people crossing the street outside of crosswalks, at night in urban environments. Given this scenario, distracted walking seems an unlikely contributing factor.

Many people are pushing to address the issue by making road designs more pedestrian friendly. This could mean more sidewalks and signalized crossing in the middle of blocks.
