Fatal Crash on Interstate 65 in Clark County, Georgia

November 25, 2018

CLARK COUNTY, IN- writes that a fatal crash took place in Clark County, Indiana. The collision occurred when a minivan slowed down because a tree had fallen on the interstate.*

A semi-truck was driving behind the minivan and rear-ended the vehicle. The incident took place in the northbound lanes of I-65.

The tree was across three of the interstate’s lanes, andthe driver of a 2011 Toyota Sienna lowered the speed of the vehicle. The truck behind the Sienna was a 2015 Mack U.P.S. pulling duel trailers. The truck was unable to slow quickly enough to avoid striking the van.

The victim was identified as 33-year-old Isidra Cornejo Pineda. Pineda, who was from Lilthonia, Georgia, was a passenger in the minivan at the time of the crash.

The person driving the Sienna and two other passengers were also injured in the incident and were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Mack truck was not injured.

Most fatal crashes involving large trucks involve someone in another vehicle being killed. In about 67 percent of all deadly large truck crashes, someone in a passenger vehicle is killed. In another 16 percent of deadly large truck incidents, the victim is a motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian. Only 17 percent of large truck accident victims are people who had been traveling in the truck.

Large trucks are heavy and struggle to stop quickly. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), large trucks will travel around 20 or 40 percent farther after applying their brakes than other vehicles. These vehicles cannot stop quickly, which creates a heightened risk of accidents.
