Serious Collision in Austell Caused by Speed and Alcohol
MARIETTA, GA- Patch.com writes that a serious collision took place in Austell. The crash took place when a 2003 Toyota Camry that was driving southbound on Crossing Creek Point veered over the center line and into the northbound lanes before traveling off the roadway and swerving back on.*
Once the driver returned to the road, he struck a parked 2012 Ford F-350 pickup truck that was on the side of the road. The parked vehicle was pushed into another vehicle, a 1990 GMC Safari Van that was also parked on the street in front of 6601 Crossing Creek Point. Both of the vehicles that were struck by the Toyota were unoccupied at the time of the crash.
The man driving the Toyota, Shakir Williams, 26, of Atlanta suffered from life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the Grady Memorial Hospital. A passenger in the Toyota also suffered injuries and was taken to the Grady Memorial Hospital as well. The passenger’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The collision is still being investigated, but officers believe that the vehicle was speeding and that alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.
More than one in four people who are killed in traffic collisions that involved a driver that was traveling above the speed limit. In 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 10,111 people died in crashes in which speed was a factor.
Alcohol is also a leading cause of fatal traffic accidents. While drunk driving is on the decline, alcohol-impaired drivers still cause more than 10,000 fatalities in the United States every year.
