Savannah Police Car Involved in Crash on Georgia Interstate

November 26, 2018

SAVANNAH, GA. – A Savannah police car was involved in a vehicle crash on Interstate 16 in Savannah, Georgia, according to an online news report from wtoc.com. Few details have been released about the accident.*

The crash occurred on I-16 East and Dean Forest Road. It is not clear how the accident happened or how many vehicles were involved, but one of the vehicles was a Savannah Police cruiser. The police vehicle was towed from the scene with damage to the rear.

An officer who responded to the scene said no one was seriously injured but could not provide additional information. The crash is under investigation. The Savannah Police Department has not issued any statement regarding the incident.

According to a report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, during the five-year period between 2010 and 2014, 78 police officers in the United States died in vehicle crashes while responding to a call for service. More than half of these deaths — 53 percent — were situations in which officers were responding to calls for help from another officer and crashed while traveling to the scene.

The second-most frequent scenario in these crash-related officer deaths was officers responding to reports of traffic accidents. Two of the cases involved officers responding to assist EMS personnel who had called for help. Forty-five of the 78 cases (or 58 percent) were single-vehicle accidents, involving only the police cruiser. Four of the crashes involved two officers colliding with each other while driving to a service call. About 20 percent of the officers killed in vehicle accidents were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crashes.
