Man Killed in Pedestrian Crash on I-85 in Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news report from cbs46.com, a man was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 85 in Atlanta, Georgia. It is not yet clear why the man was walking on the interstate.*
The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on I-85 in Atlanta, when he thought he struck a deer near the Lenox exit ramp. The driver, who has not been identified, pulled over and called 911 after realizing he hit a person.
The victim, identified as 41-year-old Shane Michael Carter, had been walking in the lanes of travel on the interstate. He died at the scene. Authorities do not yet understand why he was walking inside the south lanes of the interstate.
The accident is still under investigation, and officials have not yet released additional information.
According to a report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States have been rising at an alarming rate. Pedestrian deaths have risen substantially faster than other types of traffic deaths, increasing by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. In 2007, pedestrian deaths accounted for 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S., and by 2016, that figure rose to 16 percent. Pedestrians are dying in higher numbers in traffic accidents today than at any other time in 33 years.
The report provides state-specific data, which shows that in 2016, Georgia had a pedestrian fatality rate of 2.25 per every 100,000 people. New Mexico had the highest pedestrian fatality rate at 3.45 per 100,000, and Nebraska had the lowest rate at 0.68 per 100,000.
