Couple Killed in Pennsylvania Car Crash on the Way to Wedding

November 27, 2018

HAMBURG, PA. – A man and woman were killed in a car crash while driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to an online news report from*

Pennsylvania state police said Kathryn Schurtz and Joseph Kearny were traveling on Interstate 78 on November 14, destined for their wedding, which was to take place in Pittsburgh. They encountered heavy traffic from an earlier wreck around Hamburg, Pennsylvania, and slowed down on the interstate. Police say a tractor-trailer behind them failed to brake in time and crashed into the back of the couple’s vehicle. The crash forced the couple’s car into another tractor-trailer.

Upon impact, the couple’s car and the two trucks caught fire. Both Schurtz and Kearny died in the crash. It is not clear whether the drivers of the two trucks, who have not been identified, were injured.

Obituary and reported information for Schurtz says she was 35 years old and was head of platform partnerships for Oracle Data Cloud in New York City. She lived in Jersey City, New Jersey. No information has yet been reported about Kearny.

A similar tragedy occurred earlier this month in Texas, when a bride and groom were killed in a helicopter crash while they were leaving their wedding. On November 3, 24-year-old Bailee Ackerman and 24-year-old Will Byler exchanged vows at the groom’s family ranch in Uvalde, Texas. After their wedding, the two climbed into a helicopter that was supposed to take them to a regional airport, where they planned to take off for their honeymoon. Not long after takeoff, the Bell 296B helicopter crashed into a rural hillside about 80 miles west of San Antonio.

Ackerman, Byler, and the pilot, 76-year-old Gerald Lawrence, were killed in the crash. No one else was on board the helicopter.
