DADE COUNTY, GA. – A child was seriously injured November 17, 2018 in a Dade County, Georgia, tow truck crash, according to an online news report from newschannel9.com.*
The crash occurred at approximately noon on November 17 on Interstate 24 in Dade County. At Exit 169 (Wildwood), a Roll-back tow truck that was hauling two vehicles struck a van. The van then collided with three additional vehicles before coming to a rest.
The van was carrying a family, and emergency responders found an unresponsive juvenile female inside when they arrived on scene. She was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Her age, name, and current medical condition have not been reported.
The driver of the tow truck has not been identified, nor have any of the other drivers involved in the crash. It is not yet clear what caused the truck to hit the van. The Dade County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are investigating.
Interstates are the sites of frequent accidents involving large trucks and buses, according to local reports. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck.
During the week of August 6, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Georgia targeted dangerous drivers on state interstates. In total, officers in Cobb County issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
