Five-Car Crash Leaves Georgia Child in Critical Condition

DADE COUNTY, GA. – A five-car crash that occurred November 17, 2018 in Dade County, Georgia, left a child in critical condition, according to an online news report from newschannel9.com.*

The crash occurred at approximately noon on November 17, 2018 on Interstate 24 in Dade County. At Exit 169 (Wildwood), a Roll-back tow truck that was hauling two vehicles struck a van. The van then collided with three additional vehicles before coming to a rest. 

The van was carrying a family, and emergency responders found an unresponsive juvenile female inside when they arrived on scene. She was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Her age, name, and current medical condition have not been reported. 

The driver of the tow truck has not been identified, nor have any of the other drivers involved in the crash. It is not yet clear what caused the truck to hit the van. The Dade County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are investigating. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle crashes in the United States are the leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 14 years. As cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 663 children ages 12 and younger died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2014, more than 121,000 children 12 years or younger were injured in vehicle accidents. 

In addition, a news report from NPR indicates 20 percent of children involved in serious car accidents between 2010 and 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt. More than 40 percent of children who died in vehicle accidents from 2010 to 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt.
