Vehicle Collides with MARTA Bus Injuring Several in DeKalb County, Georgia

November 15, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA- Cbs46.com writes that several injuries were reported after a vehicle that was exiting Interstate 20 struck a MARTA bus on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.*

The incident took place at about 7 in the morning in DeKalb County at the intersection between I-20 and Flat Shoals Road. According to reports, the vehicle that struck thebus had brakes that were not functioning properly. The driver apparently attempted to slow his vehicle but the brakes did not respond, andhe struck the side of the bus.

The crash injured 11 people who were on the bus as well as the driver who hit the bus. The severity of the individuals’ injuries is unknown at this time.

The driver received a citation for failing to obey a traffic signal and for driving too fast for the road conditions.

The passengers on the bus were transported by another bus that was sent to the scene.

Brake failures are rare but terrifying occurrences. Signs of faulty brakes include the lights on the antilock brake system coming on, feeling drag when accelerating, the brakes pulsing when you apply them, sounds described as clicking, speaking or grinding coming from the brakes, and the car pulling to one side.

In the event of a brake failure, there are steps a driver can take to reduce the risk of injury. These include staying calm, taking their foot off the gas, looking for a clear route without cars or pedestrians, downshifting to a lower gear, and then applying the parking brake once the vehicle is going less than 30 miles per hour. Parking brakes work within a different system than regular brakes and should still be operational even if the brakes fail.
