November 20, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA- The writes that a truck that was carrying eggs rolled over on an exit ramp on Interstate 285 on Monday, November 12, 2018. The overturned truck cut off the ramp that connects Interstate 285 South and Interstate 20 East in DeKalb County.*

The accident took place at about 1:30in the morning, andwhile no one sustained injuries in the collision, some traffic delays resulted from the incident.

The cleanupcrews did not start until daylight.

The driver received a citation for his failure to maintain his lane. The police say that the crash was not the result of poor road or weather conditions. The driver simply lost control of the truckas he took a curve.

Hundreds of truck drivers are killed in rollover crashes every year. Trucks are unwieldy vehicles that have trouble slowing or stopping quickly. Many exit and entrance ramps are decades old and not designed for today’s large  trucks. These ramps can be extremely dangerous to trucks if they fail to slow down enough to safely maneuver the sharp curves. There are 10 identified “rollover hotspots” in the Atlanta area. These locations present risks because they require trucks to slow too quickly or have obstructed views. Rollovers only occur in about 3.3 percent of truck accidents, but about half of all large truck occupant fatalities are caused by rollovers.

In many cases, truck drivers can suffer from driver fatigue. Laws permit truckers to drive for stretches as long as 11 hours at a time, andmany drivers violate the time limits and spend even longer periods of time on the road.
