Vehicle Strikes and Kills Pedestrian on J.R. Allen Parkway in Muscogee County, Georgia

November 15, 2018

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA- The ledger-enquirer.com writes that a man from Columbus was struck by a vehicle and killed on the J.R. Allen Parkway on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Richard Lamb of Columbus. Lamb was declared dead at the Piedmont Columbus Regional midtown campus at 12:55 a.m. The cause of death was blunt-force trauma, and the victim sustained a skull fracture.*

The crash is still under investigation. While an autopsy is not scheduled, the coroner conducted blood tests on the victim.

Pedestrians deaths have been increasing in the United States. In 2016 and 2017 the number of pedestrians killed was steady at about 6,000. While it seems that the number may not be rapidly increasing, it is staying stagnant at a high rate of pedestrian deaths.

While the number of pedestrian fatalities has gone up,the number of other types of vehicle fatalities has been on the decline. Part of the reason is that vehicles are being designed to be safer, at least for the people traveling inside of them.

Another issue plaguing pedestrians is the larger size of cars in the United States and the blunt flat front end of those vehicles. SUVs tend to be deadlier to pedestrians than cars. The height of SUVs means that when they strike a person, they are more likely to hit at the chest or the head level than at the lower parts of the body. The result is more severe injuries and a higher risk of death than is posed by cars. Since SUVs are outselling cars, the issue is likely to get worse.
