Traffic Gridlocked After Several Accidents in DeKalb County, Georgia

November 02, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA – Traffic in DeKalb County, Georgia, was gridlocked the morning of November 2 because of several major wrecks on the surrounding interstates. Details of the wrecks are reported online at*

Two serious crashes occurred the morning of November 2 in DeKalb County, bringing the morning commute to a standstill. The first wreck occurred on Interstate 285 North and U.S. 78. A pickup truck reportedly ran off the interstate and flipped over, trapping two people inside. Emergency crews at the scene blocked off several lanes of the interstate to free the two people. It is not clear how the accident occurred, and the conditions of the two people are not currently known.

The second accident occurred on Interstate 85 South and North Druid Hills Road. This crash involved multiple vehicles, but it is not clear exactly how many. No information about injuries was reported. Delays in DeKalb County were extreme because of both accidents, and drivers were encouraged to try to use alternate routes.

The corridor of Interstate 285 between Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 is the site of frequent accidents, according to local reports. Several lanes of the interstate often have to be shut down when these accidents occur, and gridlock ensues throughout the area.

During the week of August 6, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Georgia targeted dangerous drivers in the corridor. In total, the officers issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
