Multiple Accidents Occur on Same Day in Columbus, Georgia
COLUMBUS, GA. - According to an online news story from wtvm.com, multiple vehicle accidents occurred on November 2 in Columbus, Georgia, slowing traffic throughout the city.*
One of the accidents occurred on Interstate 185, just before the Macon Road exit in Columbus. It is not clear how the accident occurred or how many vehicles were involved. No information was reported about injuries.
A second accident occurred on J.R. Allen Parkway running eastbound into Columbus. This accident was described as “multi-vehicle,” but it is not clear exactly how many vehicles were involved. The bridge on J.R. Allen Parkway was closed following the accident. It is also not known how this accident occurred or whether anyone was injured. No additional information has been reported about either accident at this time.
Columbus is located in Muscogee County, Georgia, and has an estimated population of 194,000. Interstate 185 is a major roadway within Muscogee County, as are U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 80, and U.S. Route 280.
According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Muscogee County sees a large number of vehicle accidents each year. In 2016, a total of 8,299 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, which led to 1,659 injuries and 27 deaths. This was the highest rate of fatal accidents in the county during a five-year period (the next-highest was 20 fatal accidents in 2012). Five of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved pedestrians, and six involved motorcyclists.
Typically, about half of the fatality accidents in Muscogee County are related to alcohol consumption or speeding. The highest numbers of accidents in the county tend to occur during the spring and summer months.
