Savannah Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Savannah, Georgia

November 22, 2018

SAVANNAH, GA- writes that a pedestrian incident took place early on the morning of Thursday, November 8, 2018. The pedestrian was lying in the street when he was hit at about 3 in the morning by a Kia Optima that was driving westbound on Montgomery Cross Road.*

The victim was identified as Ivory Winfrey, 34. Winfrey was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 5,987 pedestrians died in crashes in 2016, indicating a 9 percent rise over the previous year. About 16 percent of traffic fatalities are pedestrians.

Most pedestrian accidents, 75 percent, happen while it is dark out and 72 percent of all pedestrian accidents occur outside of intersections. One major contributing factor in these accidents is alcohol. The NHTSA found that in almost half of all pedestrian fatalities, 48 percent, either the driver or the pedestrian had been under the influence of alcohol.

Pedestrians who were killed were more likely to be under the influence than drivers. Drivers were under the influence 13 percent of the time, and pedestrians were found to be under the influence in 33 percent of crashes.

Different vehicles vary in how likely they are to be involved in fatal crashes.

There is some indication that SUVs are more likely to cause fatal pedestrian accidents than cars. SUVs strike people higher on their bodies, therefore, causing injuries to a person’s chest rather than to the person’s legs. As SUVs take up a larger and larger share of the United States automobile market, pedestrians are facing a higher risk of being killed in vehicle accidents.
