One Dead in Truck Crash on Interstate 24 in Wildwood, Georgia

November 19, 2018

WILDWOOD, GA- WDEF.com writes that a head-on collision killed one person on Interstate 24 in Dade County. The county deputies were dispatched to the scene which was close to the Highway 299 overpass. The crash was between a pickup truck and a semi-truck.*

The driver of the pickup was driving eastbound on Interstate 24 but veered over the center line and hit the tractor-trailer head-on. The pickup truck’s driver died at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.

Head-on collisions are the cause of about 42 percent of drivers that were categorized as “good drivers” in a survey conducted by smartmotorist.com. The reason for this is that these collisions happen so quickly that even a driver who is paying attention to the road ahead may be unable to avoid a crash. When a car veers over the center line traveling the opposite direction, the collision can occur in an instant leaving no opportunity for a driver to take evasive action.

Most of these crashes happen on straight roadways when a driver simply fails to pay attention towhat he or she is doing. While some small percent of head-on collisions are the result of a driver passing when they do not have space, or because of a driver entering the opposite traffic lane around a sharp curve, it is distracted driving that seems to be the leading reason for these devastating crashes. This explains why these crashes are more likely in good weather in situations when visibility is high. Drivers seem to let their guard down inthese situations whereas they might be more attentive on a rainy day, or on a curvy road.

Roadways without a center median are dangerous for this reason, especially when the speed limit is high.
