November 19, 2018

BALDWIN, FL- writes that a crash that occurred on Interstate 10 and led to three injuries and one fatality. The Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene at about 2:25 a.m.*

The accident occurred when a semi-truck pulled out of the emergency lane and into the right lane of the highway. A 2005 Honda CRV was driving in the right lane at the time and struck the rear end of the truck. The Honda ended up on the center median.

According to the FHP, 18-year-old Shawn Baek, of Suwanee, Georgia was killed at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Honda, 26-year-old Shin OK was injured, as were two other passengers in the vehicle, 8-year-old Timothy Baek, who sustained minor injuries, and 12-year-old Jonathan Baek, who sustained serious injuries.

The crash closed down Interstate 10 for several hours, but it has since reopened.

Crashes involving semi-trucks and other passenger vehicles are deadly for the people traveling in the smaller cars or SUVs. Statistically, a fatal collision between a passenger vehicle and a truck resultedin the death of a person in a passenger vehicle 97 percent of the time.

Drivers of large trucks are legally permitted to drive for up to 11 hours at a time. Many drivers have admitted that they violate this law and drive for even longer periods of time. These drivers can end up at risk for driver fatigue. This is dangerous, especially because large trucks are difficult to maneuver and cannot stop quickly due to their large size and their mass.
