Collision Between Semi-Truck and Pickup Truck Leaves 1 Dead on Interstate 24

November 21, 2018

DADE COUNTY, GA- writes that a fatal crash took place on Interstate 24 on Friday, November 9, 2018. The driver of a pickup truck is reported to have crossed the interstate’s center line and struck the semi-truck head-on. The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene of the crash.*

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

The crash caused delays on Friday afternoon as the scene was cleared and the investigation carried out. Police are still determining the cause of the crash.

Head-on collisions are often deadly, and the changes of a tragic accident are even greater when massive vehicles such as semi-trucks are involved. Large trucks can weight 20 or 30 times what smaller passenger vehicles weigh. When large trucks are involved in deadly collisions, the odds are that the victims will be people in occupant vehicles and not the people in the large truck.

Statistically, 67 percent of the victims in accidents that involve semi-trucks are people who were traveling in other vehicles. In 16 percent of accidents involving these crashes, the victim is a pedestrian, motorcyclist, or cyclist. In just 17 percent of crashes involving large trucks, the victim is an occupant of the large truck.

When looking at statistics for crashes involving large trucks and smaller occupant vehicles, the odds are even worse for the people in the smaller vehicle. In looking at just those crashes, 97 percent of the victims are people in the smaller vehicles. Large truck occupants are at the highest risk in accidents involving two large trucks.
