Crash with Police Vehicle Kills Three, Injures Four Union City on Jonesboro Road

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, GA- writes that three people were killed and four others hurt when a police vehicle collided with a van.*

The took place in Union City on Jonesboro Road. According to the Georgia State Police, the police officer was chasing a driver in a Mercedes Benz that had recently been stolen. 

The police have not yet released the names of thethree people who died in the accident. The officer was injured as well and was transported to the Grady Memorial Hospital. Another three people traveling in the van were also hurt in the crash. 

A woman from Washington, Crystal Williams, was on her way to work at the time of the crash. Williams reported seeing an explosion and feeling the heat coming off the vehicles. Williams was frightened because she was unsure of whether the “car was going to blow up.” 

The police report that the officer was driving on Interstate 85 and heading into the intersection when the crash took place. The impact of the crash caused the can to catch fire, and the police vehicle caught on fire as well. 

The crash is still being investigated. 

Fiery car crashes are scary occurrences, but they are actually quite rare. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported thatin 2015 there were 174,000 vehicle fires. Of those, just three percent were the result of collisions or rollover accidents. The largest number of these crashes were the result of mechanical issues or malfunctions (49 percent), 23 percent were from electrical failures, 11 percent were from breaks or leaks, and 5 percent took place when the vehicle was exposed to fire from another source.
