November 16, 2018

SAVANNAH, GA- A fatal pedestrian crash in Savannah was reported by the Savannah Police Department on November 8, 2018. The police state that the crash took place at around 3 in the morning. The pedestrian was lying on the road and was hit by a Kia Optima was driving westbound on Montgomery Cross Road.*

Across the United States, pedestrian deaths have stayed at a 25 year high for two years. In 2017, pedestrian fatalities reached nearly 6,000 according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. The GHSA reports that while the number seems to be peeking and not increasing rapidly, the fact that it is so high is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Technological advances in vehicles have primarily been designed to increase the safety of the people traveling in the vehicle. The improvements have done little to protect pedestrians. Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian fatalities increased by 27 percent. During the same period, other kinds of traffic accident related fatalities declined by 14 percent. The result is that a greater percentage of all traffic deaths is now being made up of pedestrians.

One likely reason for the rise in fatal pedestrian accidents is a distraction. While distracted driving, largely stemming from smartphone use behind the wheel, has drawn a lot of attention in recent years, experts are now saying that it is not just drivers who are distracted. Distracted pedestrians are likely to be involved in accidents as well. It is important for drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution.
