Pedestrian Injured in a Hit and Run Accident in Clayton County, Georgia

November 17, 2018

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA- writes that a pedestrian crash took place in Clayton County on Friday, November 9, 2018,on Riverdale Road. Investigators reported that a person was struck and transported to the hospital.*

Reports about the condition of the victim have not been released. Witnesses to the incident said that it appeared to be a hit-and-run accident.

Hit-and-run crashes have been on the rise in recent years across the United States. The AAA reports that in 2016, 2,049 people were killed by drivers who fled the scene of the accident, making 2016 the worst year for deadly hit-and-run crashes.

Drivers who leave the scene after a crash put the victim at an even greater risk because in many cases, the driver is the only person who can get help for the victim. However, many drivers who flee after being in a crash do so because they are in violation of another law. Many of these drivers are under the influence ofalcohol. Not only are these individuals more concerned about the consequences if they are caught, but they are also less capable of making rational decisions which means they are even more likely to run.

In response to the rising number of hit and run crashes, cities and states have been increasing the legal penalties for fleeing the scene of an accident in order to deter people from committing hit-and-runs. Unfortunately, many people who flee the scene are never caught. This is true even in fatal hit-and-run crashes. Another response to the high number of hit-and-runs has been to have alert systems that notify people in the area to be on the look out for a certain vehicle. This can help catch the drivers involved.
