Truck Carrying 80,000 lbs. of Trash Crashes in Cherokee County, Georgia

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA. – November 8, 2018 A truck carrying 80,000 pounds of trash crashed November 8 on an interstate in Cherokee County, Georgia, according to an online news story from wsbtv.com.*

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on November 8, a trash truck crashed on Interstate 575 and Highway 140 in Cherokee County. The truck had been carrying 80,000 pounds of trash, much of which spilled out onto the interstate when the vehicle overturned. The crash blocked all lanes of travel on I-575, and crews worked for hours to clean up the mess. 

The truck was finally turned up right and towed away almost five hours after the crash occurred, around 8 a.m. It is not yet clear what caused the crash. No additional information has been released at this time. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Cherokee County are on the rise. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of crashes in the county more than doubled. The number of injuries from those accidents also nearly doubled. However, the number of fatality accidents seems to be trending down. 

In 2012, 3,067 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 785 injuries and 18 deaths. Two of these fatal accidents involved motorcyclists. By 2016, the total number of accidents more than doubled, growing to 6,646. These accidents led to 1,427 injuries and seven deaths. None of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved motorcyclists. However, in the year prior (2015), almost half of the fatal traffic accidents in Cherokee County involved motorcyclists.
