The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that over 40,000 people died in vehicle collisions in the United States in 2017. Millions more were injuredin motor vehicle accidents. Most of these tragedies are avoidable. Statistics indicate that more than 90 percent of all vehicle accidents are the result of human errors. A big factor is distracted driving. Distracted driving has been a growing problem in the United States largely because of smartphones, which drivers are often using while behind the wheel. This leads to many accidents because drivers are not watching the road ahead of them.

While changing driver behavior proves to be a failing battle, newer types of vehicle technologies are making up for many driver failures. While the technologyto assist drivers is useful, the NSC states that drivers must still be alert as the technology is meant to assist drivers, not replace them.
