Savannah Traffic Accident Leaves Pedestrian Seriously Injured

SAVANNAH, GA. – November 6, 2018 - According to an online news report from wsav.com, a November 6, 2018 traffic accident in Savannah, Georgia, left a pedestrian with serious injuries.*

The accident occurred around noon on November 6 at the intersection of Montgomery Street and Broughton Street in Savannah. A 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty attempted to turn left at the intersection and struck a pedestrian crossing the street in the crosswalk. 

The pedestrian has been identified as a 72-year-old woman. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Her name has not been released, and her current medical condition is not known. 

The driver of the truck, 63-year-old Larry Driver, was not injured. It is not yet clear whether he will face charges in connection with the accident. 

The Savannah Police Department closed off the area around 1 p.m. and left the closures in place for about 30 minutes while crews investigated. The Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation and has not released additional information at this time. 

Savannah is located in Chatham County, on the eastern border of the state of Georgia. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows the county sees a large number of traffic accidents each year, and its accident rate is rising rapidly. 

In 2012, a total of 5,659 traffic accidents occurred in Chatham County, resulting in 1,388 injuries and 20 deaths. Three of the fatal accidents that year involved pedestrians. These numbers rose dramatically over five years, jumping to 15,806 vehicle accidents in the county in 2016, resulting in 3,760 injuries and 43 deaths. Seven of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved pedestrians.
