HENDERSON COUNTY, KY. – November 5, 2018 - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a semi-truck November 3, 2018 in Henderson County, Kentucky, according to an online news report from*

The accident occurred on the morning of November 3 on U.S. 41 in Henderson County. Between the Kimsey Lane overpass and the Zion Road exit, a semi-truck hit a pedestrian. The truck driver, 66-year-old Lynn Yeager, told police she thought she had hit an animal and called 911 when she realized it was a person.

The pedestrian has been identified as 24-year-old Sarah Stahl. Authorities have been told that Stahl was in a car with a friend and wanted to get out of the car. It is not clear why. The semi-truck hit her shortly after she got out of the car.

The stretch of road was closed for several hours while officials investigated. The investigation continues, and it is not clear whether any charges will be filed against Yeager. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

While the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.
