Truck Rollover Crash Covers Interstate 575 with Trash
CANTON, GA- According to Patch.com, a big rig truck rolled over on Interstate 575 on Thursday morning, November 8, 2018, in Canton. The driver sustained injuries in the crash.*
Officers responded to the scene of the crashat about 3:30 in the morning. The truck crashed on the northbound side of the highway close to the Ga. 140 interchange. When they arrived on the scene, the officers foundthousands of pounds of garbage on the roadway.
The interstate had to be shut down while the truck and the garbage were removed from the road. The cause of the accident is not yet known and the accident is still being investigated. Reports indicate that the road was reopened by 8 a.m.
The chief of police thanked the Georgia Department of Transportation for their help in cleaning up the situation and clearing the road.
Large truck rollovers kill hundreds of truck drivers every year. Large trucks have a propensity to flip because they ride high off the ground. Trucks are large and unwieldy and difficult to maneuver. In many cases, highway on or off ramps were designed decades ago and are not always well equipped to handle today’s truck traffic.
Large trucks weigh around 20 or 30 times what passenger vehicles weigh and take far longer to slow down or stop than smaller vehicles as well. Truck drivers are at risk for having driver fatigue because they are legally permitted to drive for 11-hour stretches, although many of them admit to driving longer than they are allowed. This can increase the chances of them being involved in crashes.
