Bride, Groom Killed in Texas Helicopter Crash While Leaving Wedding

On November 3, 24-year-old Bailee Ackerman and 24-year-old Will Byler exchanged vows at the groom’s family ranch in Uvalde, Texas. After their wedding, the two climbed into a helicopter that was supposed to take them to a regional airport, where they planned to take off for their honeymoon. Not long after takeoff, the Bell 296B helicopter crashed into a rural hillside about 80 miles west of San Antonio.

Ackerman, Byler, and the pilot, 76-year-old Gerald Lawrence, were tragically killed in the crash. No one else was on board the helicopter. 

It appears both Ackerman and Byler were students at Sam Houston State University. In a Facebook post the day after the crash, the Sam Houston State University newspaper, The Houstonian, said the following underneath an image from the couple’s engagement photo shoot: “It is with deepest sadness that we announce the tragic passing of two Bearkats, Will Byler (Agriculture Engineering senior) and Bailee Ackerman (Agriculture Communication senior), in a helicopter accident departing their wedding. We ask that you keep the Byler and Ackerman families in your thoughts and prayers.” 

It is not yet clear what caused the crash. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating, joined by the National Transportation Safety Board. The helicopter was a two-blade, twin-engine aircraft. No additional information about the accident has been released at this time.
