November 11, 2018

WINDHAM, NH. – November 6, 2018 - According to an online news story from, a man ran over a woman at a New Hampshire polling place November 6. The man either hit the wrong pedal or thought his car was in a different gear.*

The accident took place at Windham High School, which was serving as a polling place in Windham, New Hampshire, on Election Day. According to witnesses at the scene, a man in his 70s, who has not been identified, was parked in a handicapped space at the high school and attempted to back out after voting. He struck a van behind him, then for some reason, rapidly accelerated. His vehicle spun around and struck an 89-year-old woman who was standing nearby.

Bystanders rushed over in the pouring rain to provide help. One such person was Carl Smith, who said he heard the crash and ran to inspect the man’s car.

“I ran over, as well as some other people, and looked under the car, and there was a woman under the car,” Smith said. “She had gotten run over. So I immediately went into the truck, started taking out all of the guy’s belongings, found the jack, and got the car up enough to be off of her.”

The woman was unresponsive when paramedics arrived. First responders used hydraulic tools and lifted the car up farther to pull the woman out. They then transported the woman, who has not been identified, to a local hospital. She reportedly suffered a broken arm and sustained no life-threatening injuries.

Police spoke with the driver, who said he thought he had placed his vehicle in drive after he hit the van, but the vehicle was still in reverse. The driver showed no signs of impairment and has not been charged at this time.
