Georgia Teen Injured in ‘Pumpkin Chucking’ Event Making Progress in Recovery

November 11, 2018

HALL COUNTY, GA. – November 7, 2018 - The Georgia teenager who was seriously injured on Halloween in a “pumpkin chucking” event is making progress in his recovery, according to an online news report from*

On Halloween, 16-year-old Jacob Stevens was attending a youth group event called “Trunk of Treats” at the Corner Stone Assembly of God Church in Gainesville, Georgia. The event featured an activity called “pumpkin chucking,” in which kids launch pumpkins into the air using a giant slingshot-type contraption.

Stevens was participating in the pumpkin chucking, and the launcher somehow back fired. The pumpkin loaded into the launcher slammed back into Stevens’ chest, and he was thrown to the ground. His heart stopped, and one of the youth group leaders began performing CPR until paramedics arrived. Stevens was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

A week later, Stevens’ family says the teenager is still in serious condition but is making progress. He has now been taken off the ventilator and ECMO machine and can breathe on his own. He is also showing signs of his usual playful personality.

Trevor Stevens, Jacob Stevens’ brother, posted the following update on Facebook: “I went to see Jacob, I told him I couldn’t reach his head to kiss him, he motioned for me to lean in and he reached up and flipped my hat, then he smiled. Please continue to pray as he is still in critical condition and still has a long road. But all these little things are good signs.”

It is still not completely clear how the accident occurred. No additional information has been released at this time.
