Two Men Die in Columbus, GA, Accident with Tractor-Trailer
COLUMBUS, GA. – November 6, 2018 - Two men died November 5, 2018 in Columbus, Georgia, vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer, according to an online news story from ledger-enquirer.com.*
The accident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on November 5 at Victory Drive and Jackson Avenue in Columbus. Columbus Police report that a tractor-trailer was making a left turn onto Jackson Avenue from Victory Drive and turned into the path of a westbound Mercury Grand Marquis. The Mercury struck the side of the tractor-trailer and drove underneath it, which sheared off the top of the car.
The driver of the car, 23-year-old Antonious Downey, of Columbus, died in the accident. A passenger in the car, 23-year-old Jaquan Harris, of Columbus, also died. Autopsies will be performed in Atlanta. Authorities said they will be running toxicology on both victims to make sure drugs and alcohol were not factors in the accident.
Likewise, police said the driver of the tractor-trailer will be tested for drugs and alcohol. The driver of the tractor-trailer has not been identified at this time, and it is not clear whether he or she will face charges in connection with the accident. Columbus Police are investigating and have not yet provided additional information to the public at this time.
Columbus is located in Muscogee County, Georgia, and has an estimated population of 194,000. Interstate 185 is a major roadway within Muscogee County, as are U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 80, and U.S. Route 280.
According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Muscogee County sees a large number of vehicle accidents each year. In 2016, a total of 8,299 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, which led to 1,659 injuries and 27 deaths.
